Cowdray Park wedding photography

Lucy and Shilen, St.Margarets, Warnham, and The Walled Garden, Cowdray Park

As promised, here’s another spectacular venue from last year that was new to me, The Walled Garden at Cowdray Park. Lucy and Shilen’s day involved two ceremonies, a Christian ceremony at St.Margarets in Warnham and a Hindu ceremony in the Walled garden.

All the pictures show the joys of a Spring wedding on a fine day – blue skies and guests happy to be in the sunshine after the gloom of winter. Lucy and Shilen both looked fabulous in their outfits and the light levels meant I could capture pretty much all of the day without flash – although I have to admit to being really proud of the dancing shots.

Cowdray park is a great location – private and yet spacious in the Walled Garden itself but also with the ruins of Cowdray Castle.

A lot of couples debate whether to ask me to stay into the evening, wondering what they’ll gain – these pictures answer that question, they show not only another phase of the day that it would be a shame to miss but also Lucy and Shilen’s sheer enjoyment of the day and all their friends joining in with them. If you like informal and reportage photography the more relaxed feel of the evening provides wonderful opportunities.

Cowdray park is a great location – private and yet spacious in the Walled Garden itself but also with the ruins of Cowdray Castle immediately next door for any set piece pictures or if the bride and groom want to escape for some time on their own – I really loved it and the marquee in the centre was spectacular.

Itchingfield, Horsham, West Sussex, and Amberley ...

Amberley Castle wedding photography

Sonja and Dan’s wedding was one the highlights of last year – how often can you say ‘the groom arrived at church on his motorcycle’. Theirs was a classic summer wedding –  the ceremony took place in a church at the end of a country lane in an unspoilt West Sussex village.

After the ceremony everyone left together, bride and groom with motorcycle outrider, guests following in a doubledecker bus, making for a memorable picture.

How often can you say ‘the groom arrived at church on his motorcycle’

After a wonderfully relaxed reception at Dan’s parents’ house everyone moved on to Amberley Castle for dinner. It was a day that had so many wonderful elements – the beauty and tranquillity of a traditional village and its church,  the warmth of a reception at home and the wow factor of Amberley Castle, not to mention the chef’s amazing food – and I enjoyed every minute of it.

The pictures give some idea of the day, but Sonja and Dan also chose to have some handprinted black-and-white pictures taken on film, a choice I offer all my clients. I have to say I wrestle with this one.

The convenience of black-and-white converted from digital cannot be denied and if you’re going for a Graphistudio ‘book’ style presentation or tend to look at pictures on screen rather than prints then this is the way to go. And to be honest I expected the traditional print done by me in the darkroom to have died by now. But whenever I think that’s going to happen a client will opt for handprints and be overwhelmed by the result – I’ve spent a lot of this week in the darkroom handprinting pictures from a wedding shot both digitally and on black-and-white film.

The colour pictures are wonderful – and beautiful – but the black-and-white have a charm of their own. What I like is that my clients can have the best of both worlds – digital images on a disc, viewable on screen and instantly transmitable – and the wow factor and difference of black-and-white handprints.

If you liked to have framed prints out in your house they are definitely worth a look – all my clients say the black-and-white pictures are the ones that end up in frames covering their walls!

Chichester Wedding Photography at Farbridge

Wedding Photography at Farbridge

After an unpromising week the sun shone for Matt and Georgina – a glorious day full of Autumn sunshine giving a warm light as the day progressed.

We started with the ceremony at All Saints, Denmead – a very big thank you to the Vicar and Verger for their help and co-operation – and the light meant I could capture the ceremony without distracting the congregation. Although the low level of the sun at this time of year needs handling with care the colours it gives are simply wonderful.

Farbridge, at the bottom of a valley, was bathed in sunshine and every single guest was outside – pretty good for October 10th. Georgina and Matt also had a magician to entertain their guests, in the form of Dominic Reyes. If you have read my earlier posts you’ll know I’ve been photographing weddings for 15 years. Have I seen it all before? After watching Dominic at work the answer was clearly no, he was just fantastic – and Georgina and Matt’s faces show the reactions he gets, a wonderful addition to a truly memorable day.

Wedding Photography at Farbridge near Chichester

Farbridge Wedding Photography

Despite dire forecasts Hannah and Adam had a fine sunny day for their wedding.

We started at St.Mary’s Church in East Lavant, with a first glimpse of Adam and Hannah’s wedding car, their very own much loved Land Rover. The breeze added atmosphere to many of the shots, especially the confetti, giving great natural smiles. After the service we moved on to the reception venue, Farbridge.

Farbridge is a purpose built venue near Lavant, just outside Chichester. Because it was only completed recently it has been able to reflect what many brides and grooms are looking for – huge well lit inside space, with a separate dance area where civil ceremonies can also take place, whilst outside there’s plenty of greenery and views across the downs.

Hannah and Adam had a fabulous reception – the inside looked truly wonderful thanks to Hannah’s painstaking attention to decoration and detail, with beautiful displays from Debbie at Country Flowers. Hannah and Adam had always wanted Thai lanterns at their wedding and were looking forward to watching them drift slowly across the Sussex countryside in the night sky. But by this stage in the day the wind was very strong and it seemed like the lanterns might not happen. However the two best men, Munster and Stu, were not to be deterred and overcame the elements to give Hannah and Adam the display they wanted – a great conclusion to a highly memorable day.

Wedding Photography at Amberley Castle

Wedding Photography at Amberley Castle

It seems only right in some ways that my first wedding entry on the new blog is from Amberley – I first went there over 10 years ago just after I had got married myself. Many weddings later it still has phenomenal wow factor – wedding photography at Amberley Castle is truly a joy.

Flo and Steve were clear what they wanted – very definitely reportage wedding photography, with just a few family shots. With around 60 guests I was able to blend the reportage photography of the two of them they wanted with captured moments of family and friends.

I’ve just been looking through the photos again and I just love them. Thank you so much for doing such a a fantastic job!

As Flo and Steve had a week at home before flying off on honeymoon I worked flat out so that they could at least see the pictures online before leaving. They also opted for some black-and-white photography taken on film which I’ll print in the darkroom next week so that it’s ready for their return. The bride’s reaction to the online pictures? – “I’ve just been looking through the photos again and I just love them. Thank you so much for doing such a a fantastic job, I can’t wait to see them in print”.
